Midjourney V7 Released: First All-New Image Model in Nearly a Year

Midjourney released V7 on April 3, 2025 — its first all-new image model in nearly a year — with notable advances in prompt understanding, image quality and body/hand coherence.

V7 is the first version to enable Personalization by default: the model learns each user's aesthetic preferences from their image ratings. The accompanying Draft mode renders at 10x speed for half the cost, suited to rapid creative exploration.

Default Personalization: Productizing the Taste Moat

Midjourney's franchise was never parameters or benchmarks — it is the unquantifiable sense of 'beauty.' Making personalization the default productizes that moat: every rating trains a per-user aesthetic model that understands you better the longer you stay. That data-flywheel lock-in is far harder for rivals to copy than any single-shot image quality.

Draft Mode: Halving the Cost of Exploration

Real creative work is mass trial-and-error followed by polishing a few keepers: Draft mode serves the exploration phase at half cost and 10x speed, switching back to full quality for delivery — splitting generation pricing into explore and deliver tiers. A Leader Under Siege

By V7's 2025, the image lane had transformed: FLUX took over the open ecosystem and pushed parameters to 32B, Nano Banana broke out on natural-language editing and carried the Gemini app to No. 1, and Ideogram and Recraft each owned the text and vector niches (see our image tools review). Midjourney's answer is doubling down on creative professionals — competing not on editing or ecosystem gateways but on aesthetic ceiling and creative experience.

Our Take

V7 became the default in June 2025. Its sample lesson maps the third road of differentiated survival: while giants compete on distribution and open source competes on control, an independent tool can compete on taste plus community — as long as the aesthetic flywheel keeps spinning, paying users have a reason to stay. The pressure is equally real: with editing and consistency the new battlegrounds, the premium on pure generative beauty is narrowing.
