Google Releases Gemini 2.5 Pro: Its First Thinking Flagship Tops the Benchmarks

Google released Gemini 2.5 Pro in March 2025 with built-in reasoning, leading multiple benchmarks by meaningful margins.

Google released Gemini 2.5 Pro (initially as an Experimental build) in March 2025 — its first thinking flagship model that reasons before responding. At launch it led common benchmarks by meaningful margins, standing out especially in reasoning and code.

Gemini 2.5 Pro supports an ultra-long context window for large documents, codebases and multimedia inputs. Across developer communities like Reddit, the March build was widely hailed as a breakthrough, helping Google push back into the top tier against OpenAI and Anthropic.

From Chasing to Leading: The Turnaround Point

Rewind to 2023-2024 and Google was on the back foot — Bard rushed out, Gemini 1.x met with lukewarm reviews. 2.5 Pro was the pivot where the narrative flipped: the first time Google led simultaneously on the two hardest axes, reasoning and code. Behind it sits an integration nobody else has: in-house TPU compute, the DeepMind research pipeline and Search-scale distribution under one roof.

The Thinking-Model Race, Upgraded

2.5 Pro's reason-before-answering extends the paradigm o1 pioneered (see our coverage), but brings it to million-token context: an entire codebase or hundreds of pages can enter the model in one pass and then be reasoned over. At I/O months later, Deep Think mode and AI Mode search followed — thinking capability became the shared substrate of Google's whole product family.

The Timeline Since

The 2.5 series kept iterating and rolled out across the Gemini app and Workspace; in August the Nano Banana image model went viral and pushed the Gemini app to the top of the U.S. App Store; Gemini 3 took over in November; and by the end of 2025 Apple confirmed the new Siri would run on a custom Gemini (see our coverage) — from benchmark lead to gateway-scale deals, the momentum 2.5 Pro started never broke.

Our Take

2.5 Pro is the case study that organizational inertia can be offset by technical depth: in-house silicon to cut inference cost, research reserves to close the reasoning gap, incumbent gateways to finish distribution. Once those three cards were played together, the "big ships can't turn" thesis collapsed. The lesson for observers: in the foundation-model race, never judge a giant by a single model generation.
